KCWA Family and Social Services is a non-profit organization established in 1985 by a group of women who were concerned with women and family issues and serves women, men, senior and youth all of them.

Summer Student Position 2017: Justice Program Assistant

Community Justice Program


METRAC Action on Violence is a not-for-profit, woman-centred, anti-violence community organization governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. We work to ensure that diverse women and youth can live free from violence and the threat or fear of violence. Our work includes public education, legal training, safety audits, policy reform, community and government consultation on the issue of violence against women and youth.


The Community Justice Program (CJP) challenges violence against the most marginalized self-identified women and youth, by strengthening the capacity of individuals, organizations and communities through legal information. The CJP provides easy-to-understand, accessible legal information resources, including workshops and training for diverse women and service providers. The CJP also conducts research to improve practices for helping vulnerable women, and to support planning, decision-making and policy direction towards the prevention of violence against women and youth.




Reporting to the Justice Projects Coordinator, the Justice Program Assistant provides research and administrative support to METRAC’s Community Justice Program.  The student works closely with a small team to assist in day-to-day activities and outreach that aim to increase access to justice for vulnerable self-identified women across Ontario. 


·         Attends orientation, training, weekly supervision and mentoring sessions

·         Reviews, enters, and analyzes evaluation data

·         Assists with research on emerging social issues relevant to justice and violence against women and youth

·         Supports the Justice Projects Coordinator with outreach activities to build and strengthen connections with community partners and agencies

·         Assists in maintaining METRAC’s legal information websites, making sure that all community resources and links are up to date and functional

·         Helps with planning, preparing and executing community events and forums in diverse communities

·         Provides administrative support to the Justice Projects Coordinator

·         Supports the work of the Program Lawyer, Justice Projects Coordinator and Legal Director.


·         Post-secondary student enrolled in programs related to Women Studies and Gender Studies, Sociology, Equity Studies, Community or Social Work, Legal Studies, or the like

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·         Excellent research and analytical skills

·         Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

·         Ability to work well independently and collaboratively as part of a small staff team

·         Strong understanding of violence against women issues, using a feminist, anti-oppression analysis

·         Ability to work in a community agency with limited resources

·         High computer literacy (word processing, internet, social media, research)

·         Familiarity with Excel is an asset


To be eligible to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, individuals must:

·         be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or a convention refugee (A person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under Immigration and Refugee Protection Act);  

·         be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;

·         have been registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;

·         be legally entitled to work in Canada.


Hours of Work: 30 hours per week for 7 weeks

Location: Toronto

Deadline for Applications:  June 20, 2017

Start Date:  As soon as possible

Rate of Pay: $12/hr
